1. Who Should Attend

This course is intended for any practitioner who is a change agent. While the course is designed especially for coaches, it is also beneficial to therapists, counselors, social workers, psychologists, consultants, managers, leaders, educators/teachers, and HR employees. Since the course includes applications for the practitioner as well as for clients, it will be valuable to anyone who is looking to experience the benefits of positive emotions and relationships to help them live their best lives.

2. About the Course

Why aren’t our clients regularly reaping the powerful benefits of positive emotions and positive relationships? Research shows a higher ratio of positive emotions opens the mind, shifts the brain into a more creative space, creates more resourcefulness and resilience over time, and even contributes to better long-term health outcomes. Positive relationships help people become open and accepting, which fosters resilience and social connection. Resilience and connection lead to greater effectiveness, richer meaning, and more enjoyment.

But that’s not how most of our clients’ lives look. That’s not how most of our lives as coaches look. Why is that? Turns out distressing emotions grab our attention and shut out the positive ones. Relationships can be easily disrupted by many things, such as conflict, misalignment of perspectives, or simply a misunderstanding. The common tendency to ignore or suppress distressing and disruptive experiences just doesn’t work in the long run. To live our best lives, we need specific skills to be able to turn and face these events so we can reconnect with positivity.

There is a more specific reason for us as coaches to learn to manage distress and disruption to promote positivity. Emotional and relational positivity form the foundation of coaching, so these skills are essential. Promoting the client’s positive emotions during a session is proven to produce better results. Masterful coaching requires empathy, attunement, partnering, and co-creating, all qualities of a positive relationship.

This highly practical course will take your coaching to the next level by giving you the tools and perspectives to infuse your practice with the power of emotional and relational positivity. This will give your clients better results and help them live their best lives.

Positivity Intelligence Course Preview with Steve Coxsey (7 min)

Here Steve outlines this new course that combines positive psychology research, neuroscience and emotional intelligence to guide coaches and other professionals in managing strategies for boosting the extraordinary benefits of positive emotions and positive relationships.

Highlights of What You Will Learn:

The course follows the innovative Social and Emotional Agility (SEA) model, which adds power and depth to the classic Social and Emotional Intelligence (SEI) model by weaving in positive psychology and neuroscience.

The SEA model, like the SEI model, contains four quadrants:  self-awareness, self-management, other-awareness, and relationship management.  Emotional and relational positivity theory plus the SEA model serve as the organizing principle for what you will learn. Here are the main topics:

  • Emotional positivity:  Discover its role in coaching and how to facilitate it in your clients
  • Positivity resonance:  Learn what it is, why it matters, and how to bring it into coaching sessions
  • Self-awareness:  Learn how to recognize emotional positivity so you can boost it for you and your clients
  • Self-management:  Find ways to harness it for greater coaching presence and to help your clients handle distressing thoughts and feelings
  • Other-awareness:  Gain shareable tools that allow you to enhance your relationships with clients and that help clients improve their relationships
  • Relationship Management:  Discover the keys for (a) creating trust and intimacy with your client, (b) strengthening the coaching alliance, and (c) helping clients navigate conflict and improve their communication

3. The Eight Weeks

Improve your Coaching Presence and your ability to Create Trust and Intimacy using Social and Emotional Agility (SEA) skills in your coaching sessions. Help your clients manage distressing experiences and boost their positivity using SEA as a coaching lens.

This course introduces the Social and Emotional Agility (SEA) model for managing distressing emotions and relationship challenges to optimize the benefits of positive emotions and relationships. Key concepts from positive psychology, neuroscience, Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) are integrated with Social and Emotional Intelligence (SEI) to create the expanded SEA model. The course is structured around the four quadrants of SEA, with two classes per quadrant.

The first week for each quadrant includes both the “Why” and the “How,” the theoretical and research basis for the quadrant as well as skills and techniques for applying it in your coaching within the ICF Core Competencies. The second week is all about the “How.” You will talk about your experiences with the applications, engage in role play or observe a coaching demonstration, and spend plenty of time discussing how to apply the learning in your coaching and how to share the information with clients.

Weeks 1 and 2: Self-Awareness and the Benefits of Positive Emotions
Weeks 3 and 4: Self-Management and Improving the Positivity Ratio
Weeks 5 and 6: Awareness of Others and the Benefits of Positivity Resonance
Weeks 7 and 8: Relationship Management and Promoting Positivity Resonance

4. Readings and Homework

Steve will provide articles and other resources each week for you to read or review to supplement the in-class learning. Barbara Fredrickson’s books Positivity and Love 2.0 are optional, not required. They provide the deeper dive on emotional positivity and positivity resonance. Daniel Goleman’s classic Emotional Intelligence is the best-known resource providing an in-depth exploration of the emotional intelligence framework. It is not required but is offered as a resource for those who want to learn more. Russ Harris is one of the best known, and quite possibly the most accessible, writers and trainers in the field of ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). His classic Act Made Simple, original edition or the newly updated 2nd edition, is optional. It will provide a deeper dive for those who want more information on ACT than the overview and interventions provided in the course. And Scott Barry Kaufman’s book Transcend: The New Science of Self-Actualization is optional reading. It brings alive the origins of positive psychology in the humanistic psychology movement from decades ago, revitalizing Abraham Maslow’s developmental model of human needs that culminate in vibrant wellbeing.

In addition, students will be expected to try out the applications with a client and come to class prepared to discuss what they learned from the experience. This can be with an existing client or a homework partner from the class.

9. Board Continuing Education (CEs)

This class is approved for twelve hours of CEs for Marriage and Family Therapists in California (CA BBS). The CE administration fee is $75. CEs for psychologists (APA) are not provided for this class.

To receive credit for CEs, students must pay the CE fee and be present for 10 of the 12 class hours.

Note: The CE fee applies only if you are a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California and need CEs from this organization. Otherwise, when you register, indicate that you do not need to pay the CE fee by choosing the “Base Unit Price with NO CE’s.”

10. ICF Coach Continuing Education

Live Class Attendance. This class is approved for 12 CCEs (ICF Core Competencies) from the International Coaching Federation for students meeting the class attendance requirement (see #11 below). There is a $20 fee for ICF CCEs.

Listening by Recording. For students who will be listening to this class by recording, this class is approved for 12 CCEs (ICF Resource Development) from the International Coaching Federation for students meeting the class attendance requirement for listening by recording (see #12 below).

11. Attendance Requirements

To receive credit for ICF CCEUs in Core Competencies, credit toward MentorCoach Certification, Positive Psychology Coaching Certification, or to receive a Certificate of Completion, you must be present for 80% of the course, attending 10 of the 12 class hours. (How can you be present for half a class? Be present for the attendance code at the beginning or end of a class only.)

Every class is recorded, so you can listen again or hear a class you have to miss. As long as you attend 10 of the 12 class hours, you will meet the attendance requirement. If you cannot meet the attendance requirement, you can still earn ICF CCEUs in Resource Development by listening to all 8 classes (see #12 below).

12. Listening by Recording

Every class is recorded so you can listen again or hear a class you had to miss live. Listening to the class by recording does not count toward the 80% live attendance requirement for receiving credit toward MentorCoach Certification, Positive Psychology Coach Certification, ICF CCEUs (Core Competencies), or a Class Certificate of Completion.

If you listen only by recording, or if you miss live attendance of 2 or more classes, you will not earn Core Competency CCEUs or receive a Certificate of Completion applicable to MentorCoach Certification. However, you can still earn 12 ICF CCEUs in Resource Development by listening to the recording for all sessions you missed.

To receive CCEUs in Resource Development, you just need to notify Steve that you will not be able to meet the live attendance requirement but would like Resource Development CCEUs. Steve will provide guidelines for confirming that you have listened to recordings of classes you did not attend live.

13. Refund Policy

You may withdraw your registration at any time before the beginning of the second class and receive a full refund. You are responsible for the full tuition amount if you do not withdraw before the beginning of the second class.

About Stephen Coxsey, LPC, PCC

Steve enjoys his international coaching business working with people on Whole Life Leadership. Most of Steve’s clients are self-employed professionals or small business owners, and some are developing as leaders within larger organizations. Many of Steve’s clients are also developing personal leadership to discover their own path in life instead of following the crowd. Steve approaches life coaching as personal leadership coaching and finds that it is included regularly in every coaching session. One of the things Steve loves most about being a coach and a coach trainer is having the opportunity to see people’s hearts light up as he partners with them along part of their journey.

Steve coaches full-time and is a Certified MentorCoach, a senior international Coach Trainer for MentorCoach, an ICF Professional Certified Coach, and a Licensed Professional Counselor. Steve was in graduate school for clinical psychology before positive psychology was founded, but he was most intrigued by the small group of pioneers who are considered the forefathers of positive psychology. That group includes Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow, who introduced self-actualization to the world, and Victor Frankl, who wrote and spoke compellingly about the importance of meaning and purpose for well-being. For Steve, it also includes Carl Jung, who he considers the original positive psychologist since the focus of his teaching was on self-awareness and personal development through integrating the components of the self.

In a previous life, while working as a therapist, Steve became a partner in a preschool and child development center. Over the next ten years as he led the center, he helped many of his staff identify their dreams, set long-term career goals, and then take the steps to reach those goals. He didn’t realize it at the time, but he was getting a taste of his next career as a coach.

After Steve sold his business, he seamlessly moved into a coach training program and launching his own coaching practice. He loves coaching and believes it embodies the positive, growth-oriented approach for working with people that he was looking for. Since coaching allows him to apply cutting edge discoveries in the field of positive psychology, it’s a wonderful fit for him.

Steve enjoys foreign and independent films and documentaries. He has a quirky sense of humor, which helps explain his peculiar tastes. He has served as president of a professional writers’ workshop, vice-president of a youth soccer club, and vice-president of a social service agency for families. His current volunteer gig is serving on the board of the North Texas chapter of ICF.

Steve lives near Dallas, Texas, with his wife Diana, who is a family practice physician. Their sons are both in college, one studying management and the other mechanical engineering. Steve’s website is www.ThrivingEdge.com.
